Men’s Health Awareness Month: What are the Symptoms of Prostate Cancer?

In light of men’s health awareness month, we wanted to highlight some of the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer – one of the most prevalent cancers in men.

Here at Linbury, we understand how daunting it can sometimes feel to speak up about worries or concerns you may have about your health. But we are here to reassure you that talking to your GP is the best thing to do, no matter the severity of the issue. As a member, you will be seen in the comfort of your own home at a time that suits you and, with direct access to your own dedicated doctor, you can call, text or email them directly whenever you need.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. So, it’s important to be aware of the early signs as early detection gives the best chance of treatment.

It’s important to note that those who develop early stages of prostate cancer don’t usually experience any signs or symptoms until the cancer has grown large enough to put pressure on the urethra. Therefore, we always recommend having regular health checks to track trends and changes in your health over time. Here at Linbury, we offer regular Well Man health checks, which include a PSA test to check for prostate cancer.

Symptoms:

  • Difficulty or pain when passing urine
  • Having to rush to the toilet to pass urine
  • Frequent visits to the toilet (especially at night)
  • Starting and stopping while urinating
  • Dribbling urine
  • A feeling of not having emptied the bladder fully
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Difficulty getting or keeping an erection
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Back pain, pelvis pain, or hip pain

Of course, even if you are experiencing 1 or more of these symptoms, it may not mean cancer is present. In fact, the symptoms above are usually caused by a condition called ‘benign prostatic hyperplasia’ (BPH), which is where the prostate gland increases in size. However, we strongly advise discussing any symptoms with your GP to be certain.

Are there any risk factors that could impact the chance of developing prostate cancer?

  • Age – The older you get, the more at-risk you become. Most cases of prostate cancer occur in men over 50 years old, and over half of cases being over 70.
  • Race/ethnicity – Black men over the age of 45 have an increased risk of prostate cancer.
  • Family history – Having a close relative who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer may mean you have an increased risk.
  • Diet and lifestyle – Obesity and poor diet may increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.

If any of the symptoms or risk factors outlined above sound relatable to you, it is definitely a good idea to voice your concerns to your GP. If you are looking for a men’s health doctor, we take a holistic approach to healthcare here at Linbury, often caring for generations of families. Our private GPs are highly experienced in men’s health and are passionate about providing the very best, bespoke healthcare.
