Shipston on Stour, is a thriving and compact town occupying the banks of the River Stour.

It is in Warwickshire and located 9 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon and 14 miles south of Warwick. The name ‘Shipston’ comes from the old ‘sheep wash town’, as it was here, in the river Stour, that farmers from the surrounding hills would drive their sheep to be washed for shearing. This historical connection continues today with the annual Shipston Wool Fair. It’s location between Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford meant that it was a staging place for stagecoaches during the 1600s to 1800s and still has many former coaching inns such as the Coach and Horses. With the arrival of steam, it was also part of the line between Moreton-in-Marsh and Stratford-upon-Avon.
