Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week 2022

This week is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week was launched in 2015 by Place2be’s charity to highlight the importance of children’s mental health.

1 in 6 children and young people have a diagnosable mental health condition. That’s why it’s so important to raise awareness of this issue and incite real action.

This year, Place2be’s theme is Growing Together and encouraging children to consider how they’ve grown over the past year, and how they can help others grow.

As we all move through life, we change and adapt according to our individual experiences, what we learn, as well as who we meet. Sometimes, we reach points where we can feel a little ‘stuck’, and it’s at these times that it’s important to remember how much we need others in our lives to help us keep growing.

If you or your child is struggling, there are a few things you can start with:

  • Take time to listen to them and how they feel. Encourage them to talk about their emotions. Or, if talking is too difficult, try a writing or drawing activity to help.
  • Set an example by sharing how you are feeling and how you look after yourself and your mental wellbeing, what works for us and how they can adapt similar strategies.
  • Remind them that their thoughts and feelings are important

No child or young person should have to face mental health problems on their own. That’s why, here at Linbury, one of the joys of being a private family doctor is that we get to know our patients and families really well. We develop a personal relationship with our patients and the whole family and take the time to understand their needs.

50% of those with a lifetime mental health problem first experience symptoms by the age of 14. The impact on our children can last for years so it is even more important to support them, let them express their feelings and guide them through these times, as soon as possible.

How to Support Children’s Mental Health Week 2022

Dress to Express: Place2Be is encouraging children (and adults too!) to ‘dress to express’ and help raise vital funds to help them to support more children and young people with their mental health. Dig out the fancy dress, colourful garments and funky outfits! Donating £2 to Place2Be can help support their incredible work.

Watch Place2Be’s Growth Stories: The charity has interviewed some big names to share their growth stories and encourage others to share theirs too. You can watch the videos here.
